Noseypotter will doubtless point out that a pristine lawn and a puppy don't go together and that you need a run for the dog where it can perform without damaging your lawn.

Well its true isn't it? Terratoonie did a great blog a few weeks ago showing how she made a splendid dog run - you might like to have a look at it.
(Ooops, this was meant to come straight after MG's comment, sorry Snoop, no offence, you got there first!))

if you go to your vet you can get what they call dog rocks you put this in there drinking water and this neutralises the acid in the urine so it doesnt mark as a gardener i give leaflets to my customers with pets

Being a dog owner/lover for many years its a simple choice, give up the dog or give up on the garden because you can,t have both.I had 4 lovely Box balls which were my pride and joy until Pip(my dog, see my photos) laid claim to them. But hey,Pip is my pride, and the joy he gives us far outweighs having a pristine garden, but you can adapt and enjoy both. The easiest solution is access prevention, easy if it is a small breed dog,or toilet train it to go in a place that suits you remembering to reward it with treats.Grow things in raised beds, pots, containers that can be for your convenience and not his/hers.To sum up a dog...I accidentally locked my wife and Pip in the garage for an hour and guess who was most pleased to see me?Adapt Gooders and enjoy both, kerryvw.

Put the dog on a leash and take it for walks the same time every day. I have three, no, two pomerainians ( my Emily recently passed away) pomerainians and have never let them roam around free like loose cannons on the deck of a ship. With praise, your pup will quickly get the idea that it is to do its business while you walk it on a leash and nowhere else. I know, to stop what you are doing and take the dog for a walk can be a pain but it pays off in the end.

So Gooders you have two conflicting answers.I don,t know if you have had dogs before but all Pip wants is TLC and a ball.Every day I sit in the garden and play catch with him and when we go to the Forest/park he has 3 balls,2 in his mouth and one to chase. When we take him for a walk on the lead he just wants to run,he could run for England. My garden is for enjoying and that means all of us enjoy it.I don,t know whether you watch Gardeners World with Monty Don but his dog Nigel follows him everywhere ,off the lead, and normally with a ball in his mouth.Dogs need good, healthy, exercise and not just a walk on a lead,I benefit as well, kerryvw.

Hi Kerry but do you get upset if your dog pees on the grass?
We love our garden and have two Siamese girls who can, at times, cause damage. It depends what you want really… if you want a pristine lawn them you will have to keep your dog off it.

No Moon growe, because I have astro turf in my garden,as you can see in my photos,so I have the best of both worlds, healthy, pristine, ,green "turf,"healthy ,brown dog.Re.keeping the dog off,as I said before, access prevention is the key, and during the summer,if both neighbours gardens were anything to go by,the grass will be brown anyway. The positives far outweigh the negatives when you own pets providing you remember that they are animals and they don,t always meet our expectations, kerryvw.

Ah astroturf… fair enough it is your garden.

Presumably you have to hose it down then?

When we got Pip as a puppy I have an area under the Olive tree and when he wanted to do his business we would take him there and say"be clean"and that is were he normally goes,if he should go on the "turf" its rinsed off with a watering can with disinfectant in.I find it a lot easier to keep clean than proper grass which we have had.I don,t use hoses Steragram as I have 5 water butts which supply my needs.Puppies can be destructive, chewing on things, pooing on things and people should realise this, its a learning curve for both.Although Pip is now 7 he still snaffles anything he can, should have called him Fagin, many a time spent chasing him round the garden trying to get him to drop whatever he has ,trouble is ,he thinks its a game and that is all he wants to do ,play, and who am I to deny him that simple pleasure. If you want a pristine lawn dont have a dog, kerryvw.

Previous question
There's only one option - reseed the patches and keep the dog off the grass. If you've tried dog rocks from the vet in the dog's water and that hasn't worked, there's nothing else to be done.
