I've just been looking at Hywel's amazing collection of fuchsias. I love them too and there is one I would so like to grow but so far have had little success. It's called Hawkshead (a village near where I was born) and my friends in the North have no problem with it. I bought a small plant at Wisley about 3 years ago, put it in a bigger pot - not good. Moved it into the border, little growth. This year put it in a bigger pot - way behind all the other fuchsias. Does it just hate the South?

Thank you Andrew. I think my mistake then has been sunny but not moist enough. Should have realised that though as it's always 'moist' in the Lake District!

Hi Ginellie ...
Thanks for the compliment about my Fuchsias :o)
I've never tried Hawkshead, so I'm sorry I can't offer any advice.
Good luck, and I hope you succeed in growing it now that you've had some information :)

I think it may be too big for a pot as its a large one so putting it in the ground was better. It may have flowered poorly because it was putting down more roots. Better luck next year.

Oh I didn't realise that about putting down more roots. Probably should have left it where it was then. Thanks so much for the advice.

Just been browsing around and found this - did your Hawkshead flower last year?

About three tiny flowers Steragram. However this year it has put on a lot of growth already so I'm hoping for better things.

Previous question
I have been growing fuchsia 'Hawkshead' successfully for several years here in Berkshire. It's one that needs good conditions to grow well. Plant it in a sunny position in moist soil and give it a heavy feed in spring and it should do better.
