The leaves on my greengage tree are covered with raised pimple like bumps. I have peeled away the back of leaf and it looks as if it could be egg/grub as it is white in colour. It is a large tree, fruit are forming, is there any hope ?

sounds like it could be Plum Leaf Gall Mite, if the "pimples" are whitish green, pouch like swellings mostly on the upper leaf surfaces, and particularly round the leaf edges. The things inside are little gall mites - there is no treatment available to gardeners for this, and although they suck the sap from the leaves, the tree tolerates this and they have little harmful effect on it.
