my plant has grown quite well, but have a lot of yellow leaves. How far do you have to take these leaves off?

You don't have to take them off at all if its difficult, they'll fall on their own eventually, but I can understand why you want to remove them. Pull them off, the whole leaf, and if that doesn't work, either a sharp pair of scissors or secateurs and cut them where they come out of the stem.
