I know that my gardening friends will advise against it, but I'm going to dig up a peace rose and plant it in a pot. The reasons for this are numerous. My questions are: what is the best compost to use; when is the ideal time to do it? I bought this plant this year and it flowered well considering problems of space, being very close to one of my dog's dens and losing branches courtesy of said dog. Also, I would love to have it close to me when i sit out. Any advice will be so appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, you are quite right. There is no way that I would want to plant a rose in a pot. My view is that they can seem o.k. for the first year but soon become sickly and more susceptible to mildew and black spot. There would also be a problem with lack of water. I would move it in the dormant season, but to another place in the garden.

Ask Scotkat, Merlin. I think she has grown roses in pots.

Thankyou Jimmy and Melchisedec. I can't find a way to PM Scotkat. Can you help?

Put Scotcat Profile into the search bar on the top right of the home page. You'll get a list of thinks she has commented on. Her profile should be the top one but it isn't always, so just scroll down the list until you find it. Then click on it to get her home page, where you get the option of sending a PM. Click on it and you should be at her home page where you get the option of sending a PM.

My daughter has a beauty thats perfectly happy in a pot, it was a present to my parents many years ago and she took it over two years back when dad passed away, spent its first years in part shade but now is in full sun all day in her own garden, doesn't appear to be distressed at all..
I guess one way is to try it and see how it goes...

Thanks Stera and Derek. I've sent Scotkat a message now.
So good to hear that Lincsclass, when most gardeners advise against it. Gives me hope.

Just to add...patio roses do ok in large pots. But an established, large HT rose like Peace will inevitably suffer if you restrict its roots in a pot. So not recommended.

I would agree. Peace is a very large rose & I think it very unlikely that you would have much success with it in a pot. Sorry, not what you wanted to hear!

Oh dear. No not what i care to hear but thankyou Bendipa and Cornishsally.

Anyway if you do decide to go ahead I'd use a John Innes soil based compost rather than the other sort. And remember to feed well.

How do I say thanks?
