wondering what`s killed two of my prunus trees Kanzus / Autumnals
16 & 14 year`s. I still have the column type doing well in my front garden the other two are in the back it took about two /three year`s before they finally gave up ,since they died the bark on odd branches have peeled back and I can see horizontal groves in the wood . If it`s Fireblight has suggested how do I prevent it happening again .

YOu haven't answered Fractal's question - can you not remember how they died back? If it is Fireblight, you can't prevent it happening again, which is why you won't be able to plant anything from the Rosacaea family in the same spot - this includes roses, prunus of any kind, pyracantha, photinina and quite a few more, so its quite important to decide whether its fireblight or not. Horizontal grooves on the wood are not diagnostic of fireblight - a foxy red discoloration under the bark is.

Did a branch die suddenly in summer leaving lots of dead leaves hanging on, followed the next year by yet another branch or two doing the same? If the answer to this is yes, then it was Fireblight that killed them.
