Bay Tree ,hi everybody,my friend has given me these two Bay Tree,s ,they are about 6 feet tall and in large pots ,but look a little sad to be honest ,what can i do to bring them back to how they should be ,i know nothing about bay trees ,i could spend hours on the internet finding out , but i know you fantastic gardeners on this forum will sort me out ,many thanks

You can plant them in the garden - clip them over to keep the shape and keep them smaller. Don't cut back beyond the top of the standard stem though, and don't hard prune past the end of July.

hi bamboo, i have a massive bay tree in the ground (as tall as my conservatory!) when should i seriously prune it, before end july?

Oh dear, they're not very well. By the look of the growth in the top of those containers, they've never been repotted, so the first thing is to turn them out of their pots and check that they're potbound (I'd bet they are). You'll need larger containers if you don't want to plant them out, fresh compost, scraping out as much old compost as you can from the rootballs, and unwinding the coiled roots before planting them. Keep watered from then on.
