Hosta seeds. Does anybody bother growing hosta from seeds? I've just noticed that the seed pods on several of my hostas are beginning to split. I usually cut the flower stalks off before they set seed but didn't this year and now have lots of seed. I wouldn't expect any of them to come true but thought it might be fun to see what does grow.

Why not? What was wrong with them?

Mostly plain green, not variegated or different in any way to what I already had.

Oh that is a shame. I have seeds on my 'Big daddy' this year and was hoping to grow more of it. Out of interest do they need cold weather to germinate?

Don't think so. From memory I sowed them fresh and they germinated fairly soon afterwards. I think I kept some dry over winter and sowed them in Spring and again they germinated without any great amount of heat. Give it a whirl, you may get something worth having, just that it will not be exactly the same as Big Daddy

Have done it, in the past. None of the resulting plants were worth keeping though.
