I have been here for 11 years. I have cleared out my border and would like to grow roses. I had some years ago and know how and when to prune them but what is the benefit of buying 'bare root' over container grown

Bare root are often cheaper but are only sold at certain times of the year. Container-grown roses are sold all the year round.

As Landgirl says above, but I'd add that container grown ones can be planted year round, whereas bare root are only planted in late autumn/winter.

My personal preference is to buy pot grown roses in spring and plant them at that time.

Hi, as has been said, but if you want to buy a lot of plants, it works out a lot cheaper, and they're sometimes more sturdy plants, having been grown in the ground, rather than pots, check with your supplier whether they're field grown, or just decontainerised, Derek.

Thank you all for your comments. Still a bit undecided to be honest.

I have bought both types in the past and found no difference. In fact Aldi ( not sure if you can advertise!!) has bare roots in again at the moment for less that £2 and a good selection of HT ,floribundas and climbers. I have had before and no problems at all. I also buy clematis from same supplier with excellent results.
