My Virginia creeper started to die in June, and since then these growths have been found on it. I am starting to cut back the dead growth and as I do so I can see snail-type trails. Any help in how to restore my beautiful creeper which use to cover the whole house and what to do now in Autumn. Thank you,

There are plenty of new buds starting to grow on there. Snails may well be eating them as they appear. You need to go over the plant and remove as many snails as you can, though soon they will be hibernating.
If as I think, those are new growths then in Spring it should grow away nicely. The dry weather probably sent it into early winter shut down and the rain since then has kick started it back into growth.
