I have found large black smooth pebble size lumps in my compost. what are they, they look like large black conkers.

If it's a peat based compost, they could be mummified seeds or nuts or just pieces of wood that have semi-fossilised.
If it's a peat free compost made from household waste they could be almost anything. Is it possible to break them open and see if there is something like a kernel or nut inside?
