Patches of my well tended lawn seem to be dying off for no apparent reason when the rest of the lawn is looking really well. What could be causing this please?

Assuming you have kept it watered during the hot spells and it's not sabotage, the problem could be caused by cranefly grubs (leatherjackets).
If you have a dog its urine will burn the grass.

It might well be a animal has weed on it, hedgehog, cat, even a squirrel,

Causes of brown patches in lawns are many and varied - if you don't have a dog, a photograph would be very useful.
