I have a woody area at the end of my garden, my little dog loves to dig and has dug up a few roundish brown thins , I thought might be truffles. However when I cut one in half it was full of a black dust. Do you know what they are please, my dog is very reluctant to give them up.

They could well be truffles, but ones that have gone over. The brown dust is the spores of the truffle just as in any other fungi in particular, puffballs.

Just sprinkle the spores around to do their work.
