I grew dahlias for the first time this year. I have just lifted them and the tubers are very numerous and very large. I have put them in pots just large enough for them to fit, covered in dried compost in the unheated greenhouse. Is that okay and when I come to plant them out next year, should I divide the tubers?

the tuber itself wont grow you need to have the buds/shoots at the base of the stem/neck before the tubers start. if you want to divide them it is better to take cuttings from the new growth in spring.

I do exactly what you do. I would not divide until you see the new growth in spring but you can split them now if you want to have 2 pots rather than 1.
