I have some dahlia tubers in my garden but can I lift them before the frosts blacken the leaves, or will that affect their performance next year?

I have lifted mine as I needed the space for bulbs. The reason for leaving them as long as possible is to get the tubers big enough for a good display next year but we would normally have had a frost by now and I don't think the tubers will grow further. I took cuttings earlier in the year and the plants have grown well ,flowered and the tubers were quite substantial. Pleased with myself as it was the first time I had taken cuttings.
