WOW! Lucky you! It's a meconopsis - Himalayan poppy (or possibly Tibetan poppy). Don't know which species, but gardeners struggle to grow these babies.
I'm very envious!

I've found an enthusiasts website for you Thefence (are you sitting comfortably?) http://www.meconopsis.org/

After a quick squint at it I reckon you're right Simbad, M.baileyi Hensol Violet looks quite like it.

M.baileyi Hensol Violet normally has four petals - from the photo this one seems to have five. The snag is there is so much cross pollination. The Mec. Group is really struggling to classify all the different forms.

Thefence having now discovered your original question the answer to your second question on propagating is all laid out very clearly in the website Beattie pointed you to. This is one of the 'easier' blue poppies to cultivate!

Good luck and have fun. As you say the plant seeded itself there let at least some of the seed just drop to the ground.

Great plant!

Are the leaves rough feeling, even spiney? I think it could be one of the taller Meconopsis horridula group of plants.

I did wonder about that given we have some tall ones.

How do I say thanks?
