For god's sake do not take the root to the tip. Everyone will go into mass hysteria at the thought.
What you must do is buy a garden shredder, put the roots through it, what comes out leave to rot for 5 years, then spread it on your garden.

Frankly given the size of the roots I'd be taking them to our local recycling centre to let the Council turn into compost, or what they call compost!

You can take it to the recycling centre, no problem, your council would probably much rather you did that than the next cheapest alternative - have a bonfire. I'd actually no intention of buying a shredder as I'm an octogenarian and it would have been a silly buy. But our recycling centre is known as the tip and that's where I'll be tomorrow morning. In fact my car is already loaded up to the gunwales with roots, trunks and other debris

Well, I have a shredder and I would still take that to the local Recycling place. The thought of breaking it up into shreddable pieces, after the effort of digging it out, is not worth thinking.
I have a whole set of things like that which need to go the tip, but the car is too small to fit them in.

anything should go down the skip but make sure you shoot it plent oftimes first lol .
