dividing a plant

i have a plant that is large and i would like to split it into 2 different pots. would that kill the plant?

yeah its not a single stem. it was a large plant and i wanted to make it into 2 plants.

I would think you could split a fern if it Herbasceos. Obviously if it single stemmed that would be impossible.
