Large fly ?

Hovering in one of garden stoday its was huge with an orange body and large black wings hovering near .
Dont know what it was but did not fancy getting bitten by it.

Well I did I was working in one of my ladies gardens and these nasty things were hovering in her neighbours garden.
They were as large as a butterfly.

Waisted like a wasp or fat like a bee? Sounds nasty - I'd have made a bee-line for safety! HAHA.
