My red hot pokers are being eaten by little black flies right inside the plant and I don't know how to get rid of them.

the individual flowers dont last for long. are you sure they are being eaten? if in doubt spray with soap solution or another insecticide.

these sound like pollen beetles. small shiny beetles, they do no harm really. my sweet peas are covered too.
