I think the first photo is best, the one with the veins. There is five leaves on each stem.

is it one of the virginia creepers, creeping along the ground rather than up a wall. Parthenocissus is stirring thoughts but could be way off. google some images and see Ian.

looks like a hellebore to me..

It's Parthenocissus quinquefolia - a very vigorous climber which, as Seaburngirl says, can also scramble around at ground level, as yours appears to be doing.

It has enormous roots, I tried pulling it up and it just went on and on and on and...... I think you get the idea!

I've googled Parthenocissus quinquefolia and it certainly looks like it. What can I do with it now. As I say it's all over the garden?

Roundup? That seems to get rid of nasties even though it seems slow to start, but at least it gets down to the roots.

cut off as much top growth as possible. leave a few leaves closest to the roots and then spray with roundup. or cut off at the roots and use root/stump killer on it.

Yes, cut back, leave some leaves and nuke it. If there's a stump, bore a few holes, and fill with Roundup. My two neighbours and I have a Kill the Ivy campaign on (and I see in one of the pix you have ivy) and the aforementioned, with repeated applications to any leaves that reappear, eventually works. When it comes to getting rid of infestations, chemicals really are the only solution, after which more politically correct gardening habits can take over! Good luck!

Thamks Kowhai. The ivy belongs to next door and they're very proud of it!
