my ceanothus bush is in a large pot and not flowering well, should it be put into the ground?

Possibly, but this might be a result of being in a pot over this last winter, so if the plant is a large Ceanothus form and you've had it in the pot for 2 years or more, then it probably does need to be planted out.

id say most plants prefer the ground to a pot anytime with a few exceptions as pots can never take into account the tap root that most plants have that goes strate down if it can looking for a water sorce .

I agree will all. Also remember, the open ground is a much more equitable place for roots as it is always cool and acts like blotting paper drawing water up steadily from the water table. There is no cycle of sudden soaking then drying out and warming up on a hot day either which many people forget about or don't think about and of course as mentioned above, freezing in winter.

apserlutley fractal if you think about it theres nothing more unnatural than being repotted or for nearly all plants except ones that live on rocks and a few others to live in any kind of confinement .
