Sort of die off, Kpjo - they just sit there, waiting for spring.

They do not die off.....it is what we call 'dormant', but are stripped bare of leaves, in the spring all leaves come back, the leaves are usually red in colour then eventually green, then follow by lots of buds..mmmmmm.:))

If you want some flowers for winter then I'd definitely go with Pamg and suggest hellebores (aka winter rose). I've planted 3 this year, so I'm a newbie with them. But they're supposed to flower around february time if I'm right? They'll give a bit of life to a dull winter garden.

there are -- I think-- three different Hellebores species that flower from late winter, christmas rose, then (i think) lenten and then orientalis--- or something like that, i've been growing the lenten species and have been pleasantly suprised how well they do on my clay soil

Do you mean winter flowering roses? If yes, no...as most roses stop flowering by the end of November, they go dormant till spring. Hope that helps....
