These are pollen beetles - they feed on pollen and pollinate all sorts of summer flowers. They are quite harmless in the garden and if you want to remove them from flowers for the house then after cutting the flower stems put them (in a vase etc.) in a dark place like a garage or shed and the beetles will disperse naturally as they are strongly drawn to light.

Tried both today, putting them in a dark place didn't work, but Seaburngirl's mums method did and happily the beetles lived too!!

this is a problem that is hard to remedy. my mum would cut the flowers then submerge them in a bowl of water for a couple of hours before popping into a vase. cant remember how effective it was though.
