I have a Bidens gold fever plant which is looking rather scruffy, can I cut it back now the winter is here. I have it planted in a flower box on balcony outside my flat.

Usually grown as an annual so it may not survive any cold snap. You could have a look to see if it has set any seed just in case. I would leave the old growth on it to protect the crown until new growth starts - you may be lucky if your balcony is sheltered.

I leave them un-pruned until late spring and then prune back to obvious new growth. or you can taken it into a frost free environment.
