I do much the same and plant them in the greenhouse and let them get to about 6" high before planting out. If you are going to grow lots, then plant in three stages, about 4 weeks apart so you get a succession of beans. I have found that if you plant direct in the ground then the slugs and snails easily crop the tops off as they emerge and cut-worms attack the seeds as they germinate. You might need to scatter the dreaded slug pellets around.

Another thing, Runners are easy to grow either in the soil or in large tubs. They do however, need lots of water and lots of feed....you really can't feed them enough.

As far north as we are we simply can't grow runner beans - climbing beans yes :)

You may have a sheltered corner, where you could have a tub with about 10 plants in. Put the canes in and tie at the top. Then if a cold night is forecast wrap them round with fleece.
You can always have a row on the garden when the frosts
are over. They like a rich soil, plenty of manure and lime.

Don't make the mistake of sowing too early as they can get too leggy and soft. Difficult to say exactly when to plant out as you don't say where you live. Make sure you don't plant out until after the last frost. However if you are unsure of the weather start collecting those big lemonade bottles or similar. Cut the base off and remove the cap and you have individual cloches for each plant. Works like a dream especially for the early ones if you are sowing in succession

They look like runner beans. I plant mine in a heated greenhouse at the end of April. You can plant them outside once the risk of frost has passed....runner bean plants don't like the cold !!!
