60 year old onion question, my father used to sow onion seeds in rows, when he was transferring them to there individual places , upon lifting them they would have a lot of roots a few inches long, he would always cut them in half, he said that the would get much more stronger roots therefore bigger onions, i have been doing this with my onions and leeks ever since. any ideas if this is true thanks for any future answers.

Giving the top and bottom a bit of a haircut should give you a more robust plant but if you have been doing this all along you have nothing to compare this to. So try planting some without trimming and see what you get.

I was taught to do this with leeks and its certainly easier to transplant them into the holes when the roots are shorter.
