Anyone know about ranunculus? I've just been given some unused corms and I was going to plant them in a patio pot. But every site says plant in autumn - is it really too late or can I to anything to speed them on?

If its ranunculus ficaria you are wise to keep it in a pot as it can become very rampant and hard to control but it probably isn't that one if it hasn't got leaves on at present.
If its the popular bedding one (Asiaticus? the big bright double flowers) planting now is fine.
Ranunculus is a huge family of some 600 different ones including celandines and buttercups but I think its the Asiaticus you'll have.

Just for interest, celandines are no longer part of the buttercup genus, Ranunculus. They have their own genus, Ficaria, and the wild type, from which garden forms such as 'Brazen Hussy' is derived, is Ficaria verna. Steragram is absolutely right about it being hard to control!

Ranunculus asiaticus has a root which looks like a mini bunch of bananas. Is this what you have been given?

Soak them in tepid water over night and plant after that. They should grow and flower later, that's all.
