Well drained soil, full sun or light shade, very, very sheltered spot, tolerates temperatures down to -5 deg C for short periods, not hardy in most areas of Britain.

Fabulous plants though, worth making every effort to keep them happy!

A work colleague who lives in mid Northumberland had one for many years in their garden but lost it this last winter. They have already replaced it with one of three colour variants that came into work earlier this year.

there's one near Ealing that's been there for years - in a tiny front garden in a narrow street against a wall, south facing, and it even came through last winter, though its smaller now, so a microclimate like that is perfect.

I remember that they had (or at least used to have) a whole bank of Clianthus, both red and white flowered, planted outside against one of the big Victorian Palm Houses at Kew. I don't know how many plants were involved but they covered a substantial area and had clearly been there for many years....I wonder if they came through the winter OK?
