Did you cut down/tie back the leaves last year?

It may look untidy but the bulbs need to replenish their food store and the foliage should stay in place for at least six weeks after flowering is over.

Lack of water last summer is another potential problem.

Also did you feed the foliage with half strength liquid tomato feed weekly once the bulbs were in flower?

They may have been cut off too early after flowering last year, I have always cleared Daffodils after the 10th June.
