I have potatoes grown in pots and the foliage is now 5 - 6 inches above the top of the pot. I intend to remove them from the greenhouse o to a patio will they need frost protection

Yes, they will need to be protected from frost. Are the pots now full to the top with conpost? It's usual to plant them near the bottom of deep bags or pots and to keep adding more earth or compost until the bag/pot is full, which stops the foliage being exposed too soon.
