I saw a small shoot coming up in the middle of a raised bed yesterday and got a fork to dig it out in case it had a long root. To my surprise 4 inches from the top of the shoot there was a conker and below the conker was a 3 inch white root. Should I chuck it away ? Or perhaps transplant it in the nearby woods ?

Hi Hank, if you managed to dig it up without damage, then yes you could plant it in a wood, no-one will know, but make sure you give it plenty of space, Aesculus hippocastanum grow into very large trees, Derek.

Please don't plant it in a wood, most are very carefully managed and don't need people planting trees which might not fit in with the habitat.

I don't think that's true everywhere though, not round here anyway. But horse chestnuts are being threatened by one of the recently introduced pests so perhaps best take Bamboo,s advice unless you want to try bonsai!.

Bin it - it'll be one the squirrels have buried, and you may find more if you look. Some years I find several growing in my tubs on the balcony... and they'll have buried plenty in parks already!
