I have a north facing front garden and would like a shrub that will be suitable for a small area and easy to look after as I am disabled

Have you considered Azalea or Rhododendrons? Some Azaleas bloom several times throughout the year with lush green leaves (Encore series). Slow growing well behaved shrub, assortment of colors available. Shade tolerant w large and dwarf varieties - some are evergreen (minimal clean up). You can form a hedge or use as specimen stand alone shrub.

If you go for one of these remember it needs acid soil so you may need to plant it in ericaceous compost and keep an eye on it as it grows.

If there is a nearby conifer, the soil should be fine or just sprinkle some pine needles around the base.
