What would be a suitable shrub to plant in a windy gap between the house and the neighbour's garage? At the moment there is an Escallonia but that is now very old and worn looking.

Depends how big the space is. Eleagnus Ebbingii? Gets pretty tall but can be clipped, and has tiny inconspicuous highly scented flowers too if you don't accidentally cut them all off! Not very exciting but will stand the wind.
Griselinia is often sold for exposed seaside gardens and can be clipped but likewise not exciting.
