Can someone please tell me what is wrong with my friends apple tree and please could you tell me if the apples will be alright to eat. I thought it could be mealy bug or wooly aphid what do you think? I have enclose a photo of the bug which MAY be responsible for the damage. The branches are all white and fluffy and have what seem to be warts on the branches.

Yep the 1st one is definitely wooly aphid and its really difficult to get rid of. Ive tried all sorts for the last year or so - now trying Provado this year but its not doing much to prevent them coming back a week or so after spraying.
Ive heard that brushing with meths is the only way to get rid of them but Ive not tried that yet.....
remember if you use systemic bug killer that there is a danger it can get in the fruit

the wolly stuff is woolly aphid. the apples will be ok. the other critter#s name escapes me at the moment but is not woolly aphid. a systemic spray would be best as a treatment in my opinion.
