Why has my previously healthy pieris started to get brown flowers which then die followed by browning of the leaves no sign of aphids

Both mine too..definitely frost..we had two keen ones here last week...

probably been caught by frost - that's what happens to new leaves in spring, although the flowers, not so much, though if the frost is heavy, they might. Otherwise, the flowers brown and fade naturally after a week or two. This assumes that your plant is in the ground, has been there for longer than two years, and isn't suffering drought.
