do we have to use special soil for trans planting our old acer .it would be in the middle of our front garden only not much shelter from the winds will that affect it ...thankyou

If you try to transplant an old acer that was in the ground you'll be very lucky if it survives, especially at this time of year. And they do hate a windy spot.

You'd probably do better to enjoy it where it is and plant something different in the front garden.

Agree moving an old acer is not a good idea, especially into a windy position.
