I have just attempted to transplant a young tree peony unfortunately could not get any soil with it there were some roots. I planted it in compost in a medium pot with the intention of planting it in a bed later. The plant had three large leaves and germinated last year. The leaves have wilted and show no sign of recovery after three days. Should i remove one or all of them or is the plant probably a lost cause?

I transplanted mine a couple of years ago and thought I'd killed it. All the leaves dropped off and it was looking sad but it sprang back to life ages later and produced its first flowers last year.

Do not remove the leaves. Keep it in the pot in a shady, sheltered position and keep the compost moist but not wet. It might well recover but not produce any more leaves this year. You will know if it is a lost cause next spring.
