Can you identify this woodland plant?

United Kingdom

Hi all
This plant seems to be taking over my wood and kills all other plants by depriving them of light. It's growing to 15-20 inches tall. Can anyone identify it?
Thanks
Roy

Roy, during February/March time did you see lots of white/purplish flowers in the form of domes in this area? If so, then the plant will be Butterbur, Petasites sp.

I have a vague memory of flowers very briefly, so I think you might be right.
It does seem to have run rampant, though, and is killing off all the wild flowers, grass etc. Do you know of a good treatment for it?
Thanks, by the way

It's a native plant and that is what they do. I have never heard of anyone wanting a treatment for it, sorry.

I suspect that you may have to resort to glyphosate to get rid of it.
It's a traditional remedy for migraine, amongst other things, but the roots can be toxic so wear gloves if you decide to dig it out.

I am trying glyphosphate on some areas, which does the trick although it is growing back a few days later and needs a 2nd go. I have been suffering from migraine recently, though, so maybe it's trying to help ....

I have only seen this growing in quite dense shade, so, would your wood benefit from some thinning to let more light in?

Funnily enough it mainly seems to be growing on the edges , although it is also quite thick under a few of the trees. The only other place I have seen it is also on the edge only of a wild wood over the road. I now look at all woods in the area and it's nowhere else. Another slightly confusing thing is that the ground is very dry, yet all the descriptions of Butterbur seems to talk about damp ground (ditches etc.). The flower does look remarkably familiar though. I might have to wait until Feb/Mar to see the flowers again before I can be sure.
