I want to plant grapes and blackberries, I know neither of them like wet roots. my problem is that my yard gets very wet in the spring. I can control most of the surface water but the ground water is high in the spring. I thought abouth raised beds, my question is, how high should the beds be to make sure my plant do well

I don't know about blackberries but we have friends who had a grape vine on their patio and its roots went down into a well and it thrived.

I don't think blackberries are very deep rooted - when I've dug out wild ones the roots seem to run along quite near the surface, if that's any help.

If you really want to grow grape vines with the problems that you have described, then the only suitable solutions would be to improve the drainage of the soil where the vines will be planted, and/or build a soakaway some distance from the site for surface water run-off.

Both would probably need a lot of manual work, and may require earth moving equipment of some sort, albeit small scale, to make the job easier, but it will be worth it in the long term.

How do I say thanks?
