Hi everyone, hope you are all enjoying the long awaited sunshine. My question is I have a tree peony which I was given, it is growing well although a bit one sided, however when I tried to straighten it a piece broke away last winter. It has flowered well this year but there is a lot of growth on one side of it,almost like a rose grows suckers I suppose, should I cut them down or leave them. I have never grown one of these before so am a little lost as to what to do, any info would be very much appreciated, thanks. Have managed to upload 2 photos, the original tree peony is on the right of the picture with the new growth showing on the left TIA.

No it's the growth that concerns me not the pods, it's orange in colour with a lovely perfume, it does have pods and I either take them off or let them fall, have not any luck with new plants from them though. Will have to investigate further where the new growth is coming from, not sure if the are basal shoots or suckers, thanks anyway..

Is this the yellow-flowered one, P. delavayi f. lutea? It self-seeds everywhere, so those may be seedlings. They grow very rapidly. Take off the pods now to avoid more unwanted seedlings. You can cut the original plant back if you want to.
