Finger thick is pretty thick for male flowers though. In my experience, the male flower stems are usually no more than pencil thick, and the baby courgettes run around finger thick. If they aren't turning into courgettes, it probably means that they weren't pollinated.

The flowers on long stems are the male flowers. Soon, if not already, the female flowers with the embryo fruits will form and he will get courgettes.
