My roses are literally crawling with ants this year. This has not been a problem before. Are they harmful to roses.

Look for aphids, the ants will be collecting their honey dew... spray with soapy water to get rid of the aphids and the ants will go

Ants are usually a sign of aphids. The ants will protect the aphids from predators, and in return the aphids will produce a sweet tasting substance called honeydew for the ants.
I see this every year. Especially on younger growth and by the flowers.

No they are not but it may be an indication of other pest which may be the real problem.
