What is this strange plant? I thought it was one of those 'medicine plants.' I discovered in while out for a bike ride along ocean beaches here on Long Island, New York. That is a tall flower stalk. What is this?

Your welcome - can be a bit of a thug but bees of all kinds love it

I noticed the bees all over it and wondered. It's growing in an undeveloped area near the ocean.

If you stop awhile and take some seed pods Bathgate, it will fill an odd corner in your garden without any trouble,
and attract Bees to benefit other plants. Always good on the compost heap.

I just might do that Diane, thanks! I just googled this plant and it IS the medicine plant I thought it was. It can clear out your medicine chest with all the remedies it provides.

And it is the food plant of the endangered (at least it is in Britain) Mullein moth. We only grow the plant for the caterpillars to eat.

That's interesting. I like it's verticle growth habit. Maybe I'll add it to my butterfly garden.

its a biennial so lots of furry leaves in yr 1 then the flower spike in the second.
the flowers open up randomly up the stem too.
I also have it for the mullein moth.

I've done a little reading about it - I think this plant holds the cure for cancer.
