Quick growing salad crops......I'd go to the nursery or garden centre and see what they have as young plants, then lookat the seeds as to what to grow for overwintering
a good book on allotments is worth looking at too, and your allotment neighbours could be a mine of information as to what grows well

Can you grow corn in the UK? My corn crop is loaded with fat ears of delicious sweet corn. They freeze very well for overwinter. I'm ready to sow a second crop which should be ready mid September. You just can't have enough sweet corn.

I think the info on the RHS site says it all, copy and paste link below

Sweetcorn has to be sown much earlier here Bathgate, we only manage one crop in the year and even that can be iffy if you live in the cooler areas of the UK. By the way welcome to GoY Paddy.

Rows of Early Nantes Carrot Seed will mature in mid-
October. Always keep the rows damp until they have
germinated. The Carrot Fly have gone now.
Also Wallflower seeds. Keep damp too. Transplant the
seedlings later on, then they will grow ready for use in
the flower garden in November, to flower next Spring.
Do the same with Lupin seeds whilst the ground is warm.
Get some Fodder Radish Seed to sprinkle as soon as you lift your potatoes. Keeps the weeds down. By post from
Central Wool Growers, Stamford. Dig it in in October to rot down and improve the soil during winter.

Bathgate - The best sweetcorn I have ever had was when growing up spending my summers in Newport, Rhode Island. We ate it lot, on the BBQ, freshly boiled with melted butter mmmm... Consequently I am always disappointed when I tuck into sweet corn in the UK, never as good as in the US!! :)

They take their corn seriously up there in Rhode Island Amsterdam. You hit the nail on the head with the BBQ corn & butter - heavenly. It goes nice with lobster and clam chowder. I hope my corn turns out as good.

Bathgate, you're bringing up all kind of memories- my first lobster as a child, grilled swordfish and clam chowder!! Also learnt how to make Proper brownies !! Sorry this is turning into a food fest!! Fond memories so took my kids back to Newport last summer to get them to do the American food experience!!

Brownies are absolutely essential - and the coffee! The world needs to know about brownies. Swordfish and Sea Bass are my favorites - of course with the grilled corn and chowder. I hope you enjoyed Newport.

Talking about food. Went to Shrewsbury Food Festival, it's only in its third year and have acquired over 25,000 visitors. That's quite a lot for us in rural Shropshire! What I liked about it was that all food stalls made their goodies out of locally produced fruit, herbs, veg, meat etc.... Needless to say everything I tasted was delicious...
