thank you land girl, I know it's going to be difficult to identify as there are so many similar types and as it was growing on private ground there's no way to acquire a piece of it!

Is there a house on the private land, if so knock on the door and ask if you can have a root of it, I'm sure they wouldn't mind as it spreads quite a bit, if you do get hold of some..... when it has finished flowering cut it down and it will pop up again for a second flush of new leaves & flowers.
OR, take a pick of it and go to your nearest garden centre, their bound to have some plus other colours too :o))
Shame you don't live near me as I would give you a lot of it. x

Flaming PC shut down (updating!) halfway through answering your replies and couldn't get back to it....
anyway now knowing it is a Magnificum thanks to you (land girl) I think it is a 'Rosemoor' as the leaf is very like mine ...I have seen a very similar flower but the leaf shape is different ...is the leaf shape on your plant Ladyessex1, the same as my picture? and is yours a 'Rosemoor' I wonder...... the plant I saw is in the communal garden of a block of flats in Northwood ....I will have to make a few enquiries next time I visit. and take the picture of the leaf with me when at a garden centre!!
I think it would help identifying plants if they showed a leaf shape with the flower!

Probably Geranium x magnificum, although there are other similar cultivars.
