I have a climbing rose which I planted three months ago. I have fed it and watered it well because of the drought but it has not grown a inch since I planted it. It is very healthy but remains static. Can you advise please. Mary M Cameron

Roses are pretty hungry. If you didn't put some blood and bone meal in the ground when you planted it, I would give it some fish emulsion now, and see if that gives it a kick start.

It will hopefully be making good roots and pull away next year. It can only grow vigorously when it has a large root ball so be patient.

A thought has just occurred to me - have you planted it in a spot which previously had a rose growing in it?

Good call!

Good old rose sickness! Apply a good mix of micro-nutrients plus K-Mag (a natural form of potassium-magnesium sulfate) and some good compost, in addition to the usual rose food. That should help repair the damage to the soil.

Well we don't know that, Tugbrethil, because Guest hasn't told us whether there was a rose there before, it was just a thought I had. And now we have the wonder treatment, Rootgrow...

Sorry, I just listed the treatment in case that was what was wrong, since our Guest can't tell us. It won't actually hurt anything, but it may be a waste of money, if it isn't. I like mycorrhizae, but they don't cure everything.

Never tried rootgrow yet - currently over here, its being recommended at the garden centres for planting anything and everything - not surprised, they must be making a mint, its pretty expensive.

I'd be very surprised if it hasn't put out any new leaves since you first got it, yet remains healthy. Assuming its in the ground and not a pot, there's not much else you can do other than carry on keeping it watered when necessary.
