What I normally do is pick the lupin pods when they feel full. (after the plant has finished flowering). I then wrap them in kitchen roll or place them in a paper bag, then put them somewhere warm and dry i.e an airing cupboard. Then when the pods are dry and brittle to the touch they will open quite easily and the seeds will be there. Then keep the seeds in a closed paper bag until they are ready to be planted in the spring. I always plant them in small pots to start them off never directly into the ground.
