I have a black water beetle swimming in my pond will it do any damage to my fish? I am worried that I might find I become overrun with them? any thoughts please

Hi Drc, I'm no expert, but I understand there are about 350 species of water beetle in the UK, and they are predators, often attacking snails and fish, much larger than they are, I think I would be looking for a way to get rid of them, Derek.

Sorry, but NO. Yes, they will eat small fry etc but, overall, they are part of the natural ecosystem and will help to create a balanced pond system.

They did no damage to my Mum's fish though, so it looks as though you'd need to know what sort of beetle you have. Getting rid of one wouldn't necessarily help though because they can fly, which will be how yours arrived. I wouldn't worry.

I think they are a sign of a healthy pond!

enjoy it while it is there. they are rarely a problem to fish that are no longer small fry.

your pond must be healthy for wildlife to move in. :o)
