You haven't said where you are in the UK, but these plants are only just frost hardy - if you've had some cold nights and they're not in an extremely sheltered, south facing spot, they may have reacted like this to the cold overnight. There was certainly a grass frost in some parts of the country a couple of nights ago.

I just noticed you say you're in East Anglia, just the sort of area that may have had some cold temps overnight... otherwise, post a photo and say whether the plants are in pots or in the ground, if you don't think that explanation fits.

There is nothing wrong - it's the natural thing for this clematis. It goes into a late summer dormancy but should start to show signs of life again next month. Mine has done exactly the same for several years.
